Coach Sarah answers, “What is the best plan to start working out at the gym again? To lose fat and not bulk up?” in our “Ask a Coach” series.
“Bulking” happens when larger amount of calories are consumed and also participating in hypertrophic style gym workouts (little cardio, only weight lifting). In order to get back into the gym after a break, start with 2-3 days per week, and eventually adopting the Gold Standard of Crossfit, 3 days on - 1 day off, will allow for the best performance and recovery to lose fat, build muscle and feel strong. Remember muscle is not the enemy; it allows us to burn more calories and take up less room because it is not as “fluffy” as fat is.
