December Nika of the Month

Aaron was chosen by his coaches to be December’s Nika of the Month. Read on to learn more about him!

  1. How did you hear about NIKA? My wife, Caitlyn, participated in a 6 week program at Nika and loved her experience so I had to check it out!
  2. What made you come in for a No Sweat Intro for the first time? I had been looking for some form of exercise routine for a while and thought I would give CrossFit a try. I generally had been someone that would try to figure out my own fitness plans or workout privately in the comfort of my own garage, so it was definitely a step out of my comfort zone to try a group class especially involving weightlifting (an area that I felt self-conscious). Based on Caitlyn’s experience and knowing some coworkers at Stetson that went to Nika, I figured I could try it out!
  3. Did you feel nervous or intimidated after your No Sweat Intro? The No Sweat Intro is where I really got hooked and those nerves just went away… Skeeter was coaching me on some kipping knee raises and I was able to string just two together. I came down from that bar. Skeeter gave me a high five and said, “that’s some good sh*t!” At that moment, I was no longer intimidated, and I knew that this could be my community.
  4. Favorite WOD or movement? Tie between Clean & Jerks and dumbbell Snatches.
  5. Tell us about a friend or friends you have made at Nika. The entire 530am crew has been awesome! I have really enjoyed getting to know them all over the last few years. There is something to be said for a group that is crazy enough to take on these workouts that early! Even on days when I just didn’t want to get up, as soon as we are all there, I am ready to go!
  6. Biggest accomplishment thus far? Having exercise as a central part of my daily life! I have never had such a consistent exercise routine until I joined Nika. I am now regularly up early working out whether I am in the gym or not. Mobility work has become part of my evening routine.
  7. Next goal? I have been making some great strides with various Rx movements: double unders and butterfly pull-ups. My next goals are muscle-ups and to increase the frequency of using Rx weights during the metcons.
  8. How has NIKA helped with your job, hobby, everyday life? I regularly think about how CrossFit has helped my “mental game” in other areas of my life! I have been able to approach work challenges in a more calm and focused way no matter how daunting they seem at first (just like staring down a Hero WOD). In the middle of stressful times, I can bring my focus back to my breath and just think about the next rep. Physically, I feel so much stronger and my endurance is greater. Two important things when keeping up with our 3-year-old.
  9. What is your spirit animal? Giraffe.
  10. Favorite song to workout to? ‘Til I Collapse by Eminem.
  11. What advice would you give others who are thinking about signing up for a No Sweat Intro? Do it! As soon as you walk into Nika, you will immediately sense the power of community. No matter where you are on your fitness journey, the coaches and members alike see you for the athlete you truly are!
